Well, as a user of guitar amps, I can safely say that the *sound* of vacuum tubes changes quite a bit as they heat up. No solid state amps can simulate the tones made by a bunch of super hot tubes.

However, some people at a company called Line 6 have managed to make amazing models of all the great tube amps that defy belief - even the pots act like the pots on the amps. I can't stress how unbelievably *real* the models sound - right down to the rattling reverb coil.

I tried their gizmo - called a POD, in the studio. They had a Fender blackface in the room, so I tried the actual amp, then the POD. Nobody could tell the difference, including the engineer.

How wildly off topic was that?
